Port Townsend Yacht Club
Scholarship Fund

Established November 13, 1990, with $500 raised from a garage sale, PTYC’s Scholarship Fund is maintained through member donations and occasional fund raising events.  Recipients include:

1991       $1,000 to Garvin (Gary) Purtteman, graduate of PTHS

1992       $500 to Sarah Young, Port Townsend, 1992 graduate of PTHS.

1993       $500 to Eric Jacobsen, Port Townsend, 1993 student at California Maritime Academy

1994       $500 to Mark D. Anderson, Port Townsend, 1994 student at U.S. Merchant Academy, Kings Point, NY

1995       $500 to Trisha Solheim, graduate of PTHS, studying oceanography and marine biology at University of Washington; $500 for a local youth to attend Wood­en Boat Foundation’s El Toro Small Boat Sailing Program; $135 for a local child to attend Marine Science Center’s June Day Camp

1996       $650 to Megan King for Wooden Boat Foundation’s Competitive scholarship to Tall Ships Program; $500 to Wooden Boat Foundation’s scholarship program; $500 to Marine Science Center for general scholarship for Summer Youth

1997       $300 to Wooden Boat Foundation’s Tall Ships Program; $188 to Marine Science Center’s Overnight Camp; $80 to Marine Science Center’s Day Camp; $40 to Wooden Boat Foundation’s lido racing lessons; $300 to John Calder, Brinnon, for trip to Washington, D.C., with Quilcene-Brinn­on Schools’ Shellfish Science Club to accept President’s Award

1998       $360 to SES Falcon, Sea Scouts; $135 for three El Toro sailing lessons; $135 for three Wooden Boat Festival half-scholarships; $83 for Marine Science Center’s Day Camp

1999       $494 to SES Falcon, Sea Scouts; $135 for three Wooden Boat Festival half-scholarships; $83 for one Marine Science Center Day Camp half-scholarship

2000       $350 to SES Falcon, Sea Scouts; $182 to Lissy Yates aboard HM Bark Endeavour; $135 for three Wooden Boat Festival El Toro Sailing Lessons half-scholarship

2001       $471 to SES Falcon, Sea Scouts; $397 to Lissy Yates; $88 for one Marine Science Center half-scholarship; $45 for Wood­en Boat Foundation half-scholarship

2002       $490 to SSS Falcon, Sea Scouts; $180 to Marine Science Center for two half-scholarships; $222 to Wooden Boat Foundation for Toro sailing lessons; $160 to Spencer Snapp, PTHS Sailing Team, to attend Lazer Class Junior Olympics, San Diego

2003     $300 to Alcyone for half-tuition for six-day sailing and learning trip; $500 to Port Townsend Marine Science Center for full scholarship for five local teachers to attend teacher training workshop; $400 to Wooden Boat Foundation for seven half-tuitions for community sailing programs; $300 to Sea Scouts for new scarves, life jackets and excursion travel and participation; $1,500 to Sound Experience for six half tuitions; $2,000 to Wooden Boat School for matching Young Boat Builders Scholarship Fund for Occupational Studies in Traditional Wooden Boat Building for Port Townsend High School graduate Maya Moon.

2004     $500 to Port Townsend Marine Science Center for full scholarships for five local teachers to attend training workshops; $500 to Sea Scouts; $500 to Sound Experience for Jefferson County students; $1,500 to graduating students from Port Townsend High School (Logan Cadorette) and Chimacum High School (Jett Fisher) to attend School of Wooden Boat Building’s Occupational Studies in Traditional Wooden Boat Building. 

2005       $500 to the Sea Scouts’ participation in the 2005 Pacific Longboat Challenge in Olympia; $500 to Port Townsend Marine Science Center for marine education programs for county youth; $500 to Sound Experience to fund two students in the open enrollment program; $500 to Wooden Boat Foundation for scholarships to a Sea Camp for children 7-9 years; $500 to Northwest Maritime Center for “Learn to Sail” students; $550 to Port Townsend High School student Chloe Swantner to study marine biology at College of the Atlantic; $550 to Chimacum High School student Sarah Rudolf to attend the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, RI. 

2006       $500 to Sea Scouts for 15 youth jackets with logo; $350 to Sound Experience for Adventuress Sound Exploration trips; $800 to Northwest Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation for Youth Sea Camp and Learn to Sail Program; $350 to Marine Science Center for Jefferson County youth marine education programs in Science Center labs and exhibits.  n
